TV dashboard

Slate

A dashboard for the TV in my living room. Clock, weather with radar and my calendar, sized to read from the couch, with the same pages on a laptop or phone. Guest mode shows only “Busy” until I unlock it, and a phone on the same Wi‑Fi works as the remote.

In development

  • Python
  • JavaScript
  • HTML/CSS

Try it Demo

Pick a look and its colors. Arrow keys move along the apps; open Dashboard and press G.

Slate TV Dashboard

Slate TV Dashboard

A small TV app that makes Slate the home screen. It opens Slate full screen, launches the streaming apps on its tiles and finds the server again if its address changes. It also adds a screensaver with the clock, the weather and my next busy slot.

Runs at home

  • Java
  • Android
  • WebView

Try it Demo

Use the remote, or try what happens when the server moves or the TV goes idle.

Browser game

Boro Battle

A live New York trivia game for 2 to 8 players. Players join a room by code and play 10 rounds of 15 seconds. Each round asks which ZIP had more noise complaints, or which community board had more rodent complaints, with 2 or 3 choices from NYC 311 data. The server keeps the timer and the score, so every board updates at once.

Playable

  • Cloudflare Workers
  • WebSockets
  • NYC Open Data

Try it Demo

A one-player demo of the round mechanic with real city numbers. The full game is at boro-battle.yaoban.dev.

Web app

Parkhawk

A free street-parking app, paused for now. Save the block you parked on and it tracks the posted rules for that side of the street, so you know when the car has to move. It started with New York and is meant to grow to other big US cities.

Paused

  • JavaScript
  • PWA
  • NYC Open Data

About

New York

I'm a developer in New York. I build the whole thing: the page you see, the server behind it and the data it runs on.

I like small, fast software that does one job well, like telling you when to move the car or putting the day on the TV. I write about how each one is built, including what broke along the way.

Work with
html, css, php, java, python + more.
